How can my mind hinder my success? – Our beliefs, often subconscious, can be the key to unlocking our full potential both on and off the dance floor.

The world of dance is full of opportunities. Both brilliant and challenging. Dance allows space for some of our greatest insecurities to surface. It can be overwhelming, scary, and leave us feeling incredibly vulnerable.

“I look awkward & stupid”.

“I’m not good enough and never will be.”

“Everyone else is better than me”.

“Nobody wants to dance with me”.

Sound familiar?

These are only a snapshot of what I hear from almost every one of my students. You are not alone. I used to struggle with them too.

All these insecurities are rooted in something called limiting-beliefs. Many of us aren’t even consciously aware we have beliefs that are holding us back. We don’t realise we are creating our present, frustrating, & unwanted reality.

Most beliefs are formed at a very early stage in our life, usually before we are 7 years old. These beliefs are “stored” in our subconscious mind, which acts like a computer. The subconscious does not have the ability to filter what beliefs are life-enhancing and which ones are detrimental. It will run whatever “software” is installed.

If we think, “I’ll never amount to anything as a dancer” we subconsciously create a reality for ourselves that proves our belief to be true.

That belief is one I used to live from. It held me back for a long time.

Growing up I had danced from the age of 2 1/2 and had been part of a performing arts company for 4 years. I h always wanted to be a professional dancer.

Starting WCS everyone told me I was talented and had what it took to succeed. So, in 2011, I moved to California to pursue WCS as a profession.

But for the life of me I was unable to make it past a Novice Prelims!!

Competition after competition, I didn’t get through.

I felt completely defeated. I lost any and all hope to make my childhood dream of becoming a professional dancer a reality.

Luckily, my mom had recently trained in a subconscious belief-change modality. As we started working together, a memory surfaced. I remembered my childhood dance mentor getting super mad one day when I was 12 years old. She told me, “You will never amount to anything as a dancer”!

Little did I know I took her words to heart and mind and without knowing it. I subconsciously accepted this statement to be my truth!

BUT… there’s good news. – How can my mind hinder my success?

After changing this, and many other subconscious beliefs around my worth, value and talent, everything changed. I progressed from Novice to Champion in just 4 years, to the day!

My life changed forever for I knew first hand just how powerful our subconscious beliefs are.

For the last 8 years I‘ve been studying the subconscious mind. I work one on one with individuals to help them transform the detrimental effects of negative self-talk and beliefs in all areas of their lives.

It has been incredible sharing this powerful work with dance students who are ready to take a look at and shift what is holding them back at a foundational level. Every single person on this planet has limiting beliefs. We are lucky enough to be involved with a dance that presents the areas of our life that we may wish to transform and change. It’s okay for your insecurities to surface. Because you have the opportunity to move past them.

If you are interested in learning more about how to change your negative “self-talk”, fears, worries and limiting beliefs that may be hindering your success as a dancer, please reach out. It would be an honor to support you in that part of your dance journey. People want to dance with you, you do belong and you are good enough!!

*As a side note, I am in the midst of creating a dancers mindset coaching course. This program will address what holds you back from achieving your dance goals. Whether you want help with worries, fears and negative self talk about performing, social dancing, competing, learning, or being judged by others (these are just a few ideas) this course will assist you in identifying and ultimately overcoming these perceived obstacles to your success. Your answers to the following questionnaire, plus any ideas you would like to share, will help develop a course for dancers to move past their limitations and fears so they can step into their fullness and power as a dancer/competitor/performer!
